Lenskart and Senco Gold post strong India results as demand holds firm
Both companies reported sharp increases in profit and revenue for the quarter, evidence that Indian consumers are still spending on eyewear and jewellery despite higher gold prices.
Two of India's prominent retail names delivered strong first-quarter results this week, offering a read on the health of aspirational and luxury-adjacent spending in the country. Lenskart Solutions reported profit up 182% year on year to Rs 228 crore for the quarter, with revenue rising nearly 34% to Rs 2,214 crore. EBITDA increased more than 61%, with product margin crossing 70% for the first time, a sign that the eyewear retailer is extracting more value per sale as it scales.
Senco Gold, meanwhile, posted 67% revenue growth in the quarter and added eight new showrooms, even as average gold prices rose sharply year on year. The jeweller said demand held up through the Akshaya Tritiya festival, regional celebrations and the summer wedding season, with diamond jewellery sales up 43% and strong uptake of lower-ticket pieces and its Everlite collection.
Together, the results suggest Indian consumers are absorbing higher input costs, particularly gold, without pulling back meaningfully on discretionary and celebratory purchases. That resilience matters beyond India's borders: gold jewellery and eyewear are both categories where global luxury groups have been expanding their footprint, and continued double-digit growth in the world's most populous consumer market reinforces India's importance as a growth engine even as gold prices climb. What to watch is whether this spending pattern holds through the rest of the fiscal year if gold prices continue to rise, and whether jewellers' margin management, as seen in Senco's lower-ticket push, becomes a wider industry strategy.
