Sephora opens a US TikTok Shop with a monthly pilot product drop - Worthbury

Sephora will launch on TikTok Shop in the US on 19 September, piloting a monthly product drop called the Sephora Drop Shop. The LVMH-owned retailer describes it as an exclusive curated selection of beauty products sold directly through the social platform.

Sephora is part of LVMH, the conglomerate born in 1987 from the merger of Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessy and now the world's largest luxury group, spanning fashion, spirits, jewellery and beauty. The pilot is designed to scale what Sephora calls its retailtainment model in the American market.

That approach echoes a pattern our profile of how Bernard Arnault built luxury's largest empire has traced across the group: test a format cheaply, then extend it if it works. Beauty is TikTok's most searched-for category, generating more than a billion beauty-related searches a month, according to the company statement behind the launch.

Each monthly drop will feature exclusive products from Sephora's partner brands before they reach other channels. Select items will roll out later to sephora.com, to selected Sephora stores or through other retail partners, though customers can still preview featured products on Sephora's own website during the exclusive TikTok Shop window.

Every featured brand gets what Sephora calls a dedicated moment to tell its story and meet new audiences. That is the same logic behind niche fragrance house Byredo's move into Sephora's physical stores, covered in our report on Byredo's Sephora push, where a Puig-owned label traded exclusivity for reach as its category matured.

How the launch will unfold

The run-up includes teasers, interactive experiences and creator-led content that invite shoppers to guess which brand is coming. It culminates in an official TikTok Live hosted by a celebrity, featuring brand founders and creators who will unveil the products and take audience questions in real time.

Sephora North America president and chief executive Artemis Patrick said the retailer already has an active beauty community on TikTok and wants a new way to interact with existing customers while extending reach to a highly immersed audience. She called the launch a natural progression in how Sephora leads and innovates in beauty retail.

Anca Marola, Sephora's global chief digital officer, framed the move as an extension of the company's global digital strategy. She said the test-and-learn pilot will gather insights to inform digital innovation and a future rollout across Sephora's global network, leaving open whether or when other markets follow.

TikTok Shop's Bianca Sing, global head of strategic brand partnerships, said the platform is pairing Sephora's leadership in beauty discovery with TikTok's ability to connect communities through entertainment, creators and culture. Neither side has said what volume of sales the pilot is expected to generate.

Ulta Beauty became the first specialty beauty and wellness retailer to debut on TikTok Shop in the US, in March, giving it several months' head start that Sephora is now working to close.

What else LVMH's beauty arm has changed

The social commerce push arrives as LVMH has also been reshaping who runs its beauty division, installing Alexandre Oules as chief operating officer, as we reported in LVMH beauty division names new chief operating officer, after his move from Balenciaga strengthened the team built around Veronique Courtois, detailed in our coverage of that appointment.

The pilot also follows Sephora's recent overhaul of its US loyalty programme as competition in beauty retail intensifies, a shift we examined in our report on Sephora's loyalty overhaul. Both moves point the same way: toward keeping existing shoppers engaged while chasing new ones on the platforms where they already spend time.

Sephora has not disclosed which brands will headline the first drop, nor said how many drops the pilot will run before it decides on a wider rollout across its global network.
