Space NK names Emma Simpson-Scott CEO as Andy Lightfoot steps down after ten years
Two more senior hires, in finance and ecommerce, land alongside the top change at the Ulta Beauty owned chain.
Space NK has named Emma Simpson-Scott as chief executive, succeeding Andy Lightfoot, who is stepping down after ten years leading the British beauty retailer. Simpson-Scott takes over on 13 September. She moves into the top job directly from her post as chief marketing officer, a role she has held for seven and a half years.
Space NK, owned by Ulta Beauty, has not said why Lightfoot is leaving. The company's own statement thanks him only for a period it calls significant growth and transformation, without explaining the timing, though it credits him with steering the retailer's acquisition by Ulta Beauty to completion.
Lightfoot became CEO in April 2019 and has spent a decade at the company in total. Under his leadership Space NK completed its acquisition by Ulta Beauty, a deal the company describes as central to his legacy, alongside strengthening its position as a market-leading beauty retailer.
Who Emma Simpson-Scott is
Simpson-Scott has been with Space NK for more than ten years in total, seven and a half of them as chief marketing officer. The company credits her with more than 20 years of experience across luxury retail, brand marketing and customer experience, and with strengthening its brand partnerships.
The company points to a track record of driving sustainable growth as the basis for her promotion. She has worked directly with the retailer's roster of beauty brands throughout her marketing tenure, relationships the company says will underpin its next phase of growth.
Kecia Steelman, president and chief executive of Ulta Beauty, called Simpson-Scott a highly respected retail leader who brings deep customer insight, retail expertise and a passion for building exceptional teams. Steelman said she looks forward to continued work together as Simpson-Scott leads Space NK into its next chapter of growth.
Steelman also thanked Lightfoot for his ten years of service, saying Space NK achieved significant growth and strengthened its position as a market-leading beauty retailer under him. She added that his legacy, including the transition into the Ulta Beauty family, will be felt for many years to come.
Simpson-Scott described the appointment as an honour, saying she has seen first-hand the passion, expertise and entrepreneurial spirit of Space NK's teams over more than a decade with the company. She called that spirit instrumental in evolving Space NK into the business it is today.
She said Space NK has built exceptional relationships with some of the world's most innovative and in-demand beauty brands. Working with those partners and what she called exceptionally talented teams, she said she intends to drive continued innovation and growth across the retailer's stores and online business.
Two more senior appointments
The leadership change extends beyond the chief executive role. Hannah Quy joins Space NK this month as chief financial officer, taking responsibility for finance, property and distribution across the retailer's operations, one of two new senior hires announced alongside Simpson-Scott's promotion.
Tiff Ruis joins Space NK from Ulta Beauty as senior vice president of retail and ecommerce, bringing experience from within the American parent company directly into the British business's day-to-day operations. Space NK frames the pair of hires as reinforcing its commitment to accelerating growth.
A company statement said the appointments reinforce Space NK's commitment to accelerating growth, investing in its people and maintaining its position as the leading curator of luxury beauty across the UK and Ireland. No further personnel changes were disclosed alongside these three roles.
Space NK positions itself as the leading curator of luxury beauty in the UK and Ireland, a status it says the new leadership team is intended to protect as Ulta Beauty, the American chain that bought it last year, extends its reach into the British market through this appointment.
Space NK has not disclosed a start date for Ruis or further specifics of Quy's onboarding beyond confirming both join this month. What either hire changes about the retailer's approach to ecommerce or property strategy has not yet been set out publicly by the company.
Simpson-Scott's promotion from within, rather than an external hire, follows the pattern the company set with Lightfoot's own tenure, and it leaves Space NK's senior team now split between long-serving executives and new arrivals brought in directly from its American parent.
