Theory names James Kelly global CEO, moving Dinesh Tandon to co-chief operating officer
Kelly, a thirteen-year Fast Retailing veteran, will also oversee Helmut Lang as Theory expands its top team.
Theory has named James Kelly global chief executive, promoting from within a leadership team that has run the brand's finance and operations for the past several years. He succeeds Dinesh Tandon, who becomes global co-chief operating officer of Theory while also returning to his prior post as chief executive of Theory China.
Sirena Peck is the other global co-chief operating officer, working alongside Tandon under the new structure. Kelly's remit now covers Theory and Helmut Lang together, taking in the two brands' global headquarters functions, all commercial operations and their worldwide growth initiatives, according to the company.
Kelly is based at Theory's global headquarters in the Meatpacking District in New York, where the brand has run its business since Tandon relocated there in 2017. He joined Theory in 2022 as chief financial officer before becoming global co-chief operating officer, a run of just under four years inside the company.
What Kelly has done at Theory
Since arriving in 2022, Kelly has focused on reinforcing Theory's direct-to-consumer business while also overseeing finance, planning, procurement and business transformation across the United States, the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Theory describes him as having worked closely with teams across its global organisation on both operational and commercial capabilities.
He arrives at the chief executive role with thirteen years inside Theory's parent, Fast Retailing, the Japanese group that also owns Uniqlo. Kelly helped scale Uniqlo's early United States business before moving on to lead the brand's market expansion in Canada, giving him experience across three separate national retail operations.
Kazumi Yanai, chairman of Theory, credited Kelly with strategic vision, operational excellence and a deep understanding of the business built up over his time at the company. Yanai said the move positions Theory for continued success around the world as Tandon shifts his attention to what the chairman called one of its most important markets.
Kelly himself framed the appointment around Theory's design and manufacturing identity rather than around the reshuffle. He called it an honour to lead a brand with an enduring legacy of timeless design, exceptional quality and New York creativity, and said he would work with Theory's teams to keep delivering product and experience for customers globally.
What changes for Dinesh Tandon
Tandon was named chief executive of Theory in 2019, succeeding Andrew Rosen, the brand's cofounder, who became an adviser at that point. Tandon had joined Theory in 2013 as chief executive of its Greater China and Southeast Asia market, based in Hong Kong, where the company says he oversaw aggressive growth.
He was named chief operating officer and moved to Theory's New York headquarters in 2017, two years before taking the top job.
Theory has not disclosed what prompted the restructuring, nor whether Tandon sought the return to China or was directed there as the company expanded its senior team. The announcement frames the move as growth rather than a departure, but a chief executive stepping back to a co-chief operating officer title is, on its face, a demotion.
Theory operates under Fast Retailing, the Japanese retail group built around Uniqlo that has been Kelly's employer for thirteen years across multiple markets. The parent company's decision to draw a chief executive from inside that longer career, rather than externally, points to continuity being the priority for Theory's next phase.
How the move compares elsewhere in fashion
Leadership changes of this kind have been a recurring theme across the industry this year. We have covered Poltrona Frau naming Giovanni Baldi, formerly Dolce & Gabbana's EMEA president, as its new chief executive, and Kering appointing Sabina Belli to lead its Italian operations.
Elsewhere, we reported on Bang & Olufsen naming former Alexander McQueen chief executive Gianfilippo Testa to lead the audio brand, and on LVMH's beauty division appointing a new chief operating officer as it reshapes its senior ranks. Theory's promotion from within sets it apart from those external hires.
Theory has not said when the new structure takes effect or whether further appointments will follow beneath Kelly and Tandon. The company's statement covers only the three roles named: Kelly as global chief executive, Tandon as co-chief operating officer and China chief, and Peck as the other co-chief operating officer.
No timeline has been given for Kelly's first strategic decisions as chief executive, nor for how Helmut Lang, which now falls under his remit alongside Theory, will factor into that agenda. Theory's public comments so far centre on continuity in New York and renewed focus on China under Tandon.
